Apostasy #1 – Liberal Theology

Please Heed This Warning

James gives you some sage advice.

My friend, you are double-minded and unstable. You must submit to God’s plan, and here is the first step:

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.”

You lack wisdom of two realities. First, you do not understand the holiness of God. You think God is like you.

God says, “Remember this, and be assured; Recall it to mind, you transgressors. Remember the former things long past; for I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, ‘My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish My good pleasure’; Calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of My purpose from a far country. Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, surely I will do it. Listen to Me, you stubborn-minded, who are far from righteousness. I bring near My righteousness, it is not far off; And my salvation will not delay.”

“For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.”

“If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire. If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery hell.”

Second, you do not understand the depths of your sinfulness. You think that you are wise and good.

“For it is written, ‘I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE.” Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe”

“What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that Jews and Greeks are all under sin; as it is written, ‘THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.'”

God’s Prescription

So, how are you, a sinful person, able to draw near to the holy and just God? How will you avoid eternal punishment in Hell? Here’s how:

1) Repent

“Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe the gospel.'”

You must humble yourself before the LORD God, as James warns. Be humble! Mourn for your wickedness. Agree with God that you are a helpless sinner, deserving of eternal punishment. Turn and flee from the wrath to come. God has a way of escape from His just punishment for your sinfulness.

2) Believe

Doubters do not participate in God’s kingdom! You must believe the truth. When you have repented, you believe the truth about yourself and your just desserts. Now you must humbly accept God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also”

Jesus is not who you think he is. He is the eternal God-Man. The universe was created through Jesus.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.”

Jesus was the only person to ever live a sinless life. In order to participate in the Kingdom of Heaven, you must be righteous. But there are none who are righteous. How can anyone be saved from God’s holy judgment? Through faith in God’s promise. We are justified through faith. By God’s grace, those who submit to God in faith receive the perfect righteousness of Jesus. A great exchange occurs. The sin of the unrighteous believer is placed upon the sinless Son of God. The perfect righteousness of the Son of God is reckoned to the sinful believer.

“Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

“But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed ; for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Where then is boasting? It is excluded.”

You must repent of your arrogance. You must admit of your spiritual ignorance. You do not know what tomorrow holds.

“How will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?”

“Humble yourself in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.”
