Intererior Locution

<— PREVIOUS ERROR                                       NEXT ERROR —>

Definition:   The mystical reception of private spiritual revelation. This phenomenon is distinct from visions or apparitions, as locutions are not received through the five senses. In charismatic circles, this may also be known as “receiving a word from the Lord.” For Catholics, the locution is most often a message from Mary. Interior locutions received by Italian priest Stefano Gobbi from Mary led to the formation of the “Marian Movement of Priests.” The main tenets of the group include consecration of the priest to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, submission and devotion to the pope, the importance of praying the rosary, and urging the laity to trust in Mary and pray through her to Jesus.

Discussion:  The Scripture warns us about the self-deceptions of the heart (Jer. 17:1; Prov. 14:12). When Jesus gives understanding, it is in order to be able to comprehend the Scriptures (Lk. 24:36). All personal illumination must be subject to the truth of the written word, which is the all-sufficient manual for life (2 Tim. 3:15-17). Alleged revelations from Mary that demand the consecration one’s heart to her are contrary to the truth that Jesus is our Lord. These locutions are deceitful spirits that seek to diminish the authority of Jesus and hide the simplicity of the gospel (1 Tim. 4:1).
